"Gahae Park: Music Drawing – Rhythm and Variation "

Gallery Yonhee at KCC (100 Grove Street, Tenafly, NJ) is pleased to present the Solo exhibition "Gahae Park: Music Drawing – Rhythm and Variation".  The show will run from April 4 - 27, 2019, with an opening reception on Thursday, April 4th from 6:30 pm and the Concert starts from 7:30 PM.

Gahae Park uses simplified patterns in her meticulously cut relief drawings as a representation of the creative process underlying visual art, music and human life itself. She chooses to accept life’s rhythms as the force and material for creation. Park fuses the raw material of music into visual, emotional and intellectual forms by drawing with cut paper, shaping and layering positive and negative space into rhythmic patterns. The cut openings are composed with a focus on creating lines that specify coherent patterns of light shadows of a grid, forming a visual musical structure. The paper itself becomes the instrument that reacts to light and thereby creating visual musical patterns.  At this exhibition, she will present a lighting installation: Poem-Sunlight and musical drawings related to rhythm and variation. These works are musical, a site-specific combination of a sense of time and metaphysical space with sound diagrams suggesting melody in her unique patterns.

Park received an MFA in painting from Pratt, New York and Hong Ik University in Seoul. She has exhibited at The international Paper Art Biennial, Sofia International Artists Museum, Poland, and National Museum of Contemporary Art, Seoul, and Queens Museum of Art, NY, Museum of Contemporary Art of Crete, Greece, Islip Art Museum, NY and received The Pollock Krasner Foundation Grant, The Edward F. Albee Foundation Fellowship, the Art Omi Fellowship, and has been reviewed in Art in America, Sculpture Magazine, Asian Art News and Brooklyn Rail.

박가혜 개인전: 뮤직 드로잉 - 리듬과 변형

뮤직 드로잉 - 리듬과 변주

박가혜 작가의 이번 전시는 공간 속에 "음악-소리"라는 매체를 시각화하는 과정에서 형성되어 지는 빛 과 리듬의 변형에 의한 시각적 뮤직(Music Composition)드로잉 설치 작업 이다. 2D종이를 피아노 키보드나 음향 그래프 형태로 조각하여, 작가가 드로잉 하는 음악:소리 와 리듬에 따라 조각된 작은 창을 열고 닫으면서 열린 공간 속에 빛을 투영화하여 음과 양을 형성해 나가는 것이다. 이는 소리를 구조적으로 분석하여 입체화시키고 그 위에 색이 도입된 보고 느끼는 "시각적 악보" (Visual Score)이며 종이 그 자체가 악기로써, 소리를 내재한 상징적 미학세계를 보여준다. 

빛과 리듬 그리고 변형이라는 개념을 소리, 구조, 그리고 색의 결합과 조화를 통해 시각화한 실험적 설치 작품, 뮤직드로잉- 리듬과 변형(Music Drawing  - Rhythm and Variation)을 감상해 보자.  

 

박가혜 작가는 홍익대학교 미술대학을 거쳐 뉴욕 브루클린에 위치한 프렛 대학원(Pratt Institute) 에서 학위를 받았고, 현재 뉴욕(New York)에서 작업을 하며 활발한 활동을 하고 있는 설치 작가(Installation Artist)이다. 주요 경력으로는 폴락 크라스너 그랜트 수상 (Pollock Krasner Grant), 에드워드 엘비 레지던시 (Edward F. Albee Residency), 권위 있는 레지던시 중에 하나인 아트 오마이  레지던시 (Art OMI Residency)에 참가했고 저명한 갤러리와 유럽의 뮤지움 전시, 그리고 종이 (Paper) 비엔날레 등에 초대되는 등 주목을 받고 있다.
