Gallery Yonhee at KCC (100 Grove Street, Tenafly, NJ) is pleased to present the Solo exhibition "Manhee Kim: Calculated Abstract". The show will run from March. 5 - 29, 2019, with an opening reception on Friday, March 8th, 6:30 pm and Jazz Concert from 7:30 pm by Ben Rosenblum Jazz Trio: Ben Rosenblum(Piano), Ben Zweig(Drum), Kanoa Mendelhall(Bass)

ManHee Kim paints with the huge energy of the calculated Abstract Expression.

Kim’s new gestural abstraction, there is a purposeful movement that is almost aggressive yet controlled, that subverts claims of perfection.  In Kim’s works, these qualities appear in his flying brushstrokes that contain as much void space as solid. Kim’s approach to his work is very serious however although there is an intuitive element present. Kim works with different size scales without confining his smaller works to the genre of studies, but rather giving them their due democratically speaking.  Kim’s works are not meant to produce calm resolution but rather agitation and excitement addressing the multivalent and tumultuous world in which we reside.

한폭의 수묵화 같이 멋들어진 김만희 작가의 추상화는 아주 치밀하게 계산되어 그려진 듯 모든 것이 완벽에 가깝다. 흐트러진 듯 단정하며, 규율에서 벗어난 듯 자유 분방하나 잘 정돈되어 정확하게 제자리에 자리잡고 있다. 색채 또한 과감한 듯 하나 강도와 농도를 중화시켜주는 배색의 배치가 세련미를 한층 높여준다. 질감 또한 캔버스의 종류에 따라 그 특징을 살려 표현해 내는 등 수많은 실험과 연구를 통해 습득한 기술을 아주 맛깔스럽게 사용을 한다.

 

구상을 풀어놓은 것이 추상인데 어떻게 풀어가냐에 따라 그 이야기의 전개는 전혀 달라진다.

정해진 틀 속에서 벗어난 자유로움 그리고 그 자유로움 속에 규칙을 정해 넣은 김만희 작가의 계산되어진 추상화 그리고 그 속에서 전해지는 거대한 에너지, 그래서 이번 전시가 더욱 기대 되어 진다.
